Olan Interview -2

I had a bunch of photos Olan sent me of his work - really good one's that are actually too large for this blog template - hopefully, in shrinking them I'll have kept the aspect ratio about right. I'll speak to Olan in person soon but these pictures speak for themselves: The first painting is called "androgynous" and I really don't know who the woman is or the eyes in the background are of - perhaps Olan will tell me when I speak to him next. There's actually quite a bit of subtle brush work I noticed when I view the work at the Gallery the other day. The next painting is of Anne Hathiway, With her long dark hair, large expressive eyes and obvious talent, Anne Hathaway was earmarked as one to watch from the time she made her primetime acting debut as eldest daughter Meghan Green in the short-lived Fox drama series "Get Real" (1999-2000). The Brooklyn-born, New Jersey-raised player developed her craft as a child performer in theater, earning her stripes in several productions at the famed Paper Mill Playhouse (including "Gigi" with Gavin MacLeod and early stagings of the musical version of "Jane Eyre"). Hathaway was reportedly also the first and (to date) only teenager accepted into the acting program at The Barrow Group based in Manhattan. Although she had attempted to land Broadway roles, Hathaway found her height (five feet eight inches) and youth detrimental. (She was too tall to be accepted in children's roles and too young-looking to portray adult parts.) She was perfect for TV and films, though, and soon landed the part of the overachieving high schooler on "Get Real" which earned her positive critical reviews. And the next painting is Coney Island Kiss - and being that I don't leave that far from Coney Island - it's sorta interesting to see what Olan thinks Coney Island is about.  I personally don't like going to Coney Island and rarely go over there. It's almost as if Olan is painting the aura, or feeling of the person he's photographing and then merging with color and fabric paint.   It's an interesting hybrid - a photo that's far more than a photo - an aura feeling painting photo - I feel there's a lot of sensuality in the work as well with the left breast highlighted, the colors come together in a way that go beyound the photograph, beyond the subject. And the last painting I'll post here tonight is Metamorphsis And what's interesting in this work it that Olan is getting away from the Photograph and going into the purely expressive aspects of color.  I'm suspecting that the Photos of people, though interesting, at times interfear with the fullest use of color and here he's freeing himself from the image - yet not losing sight of it. Time to go to bed - Marshall.

  1. “It’s almost as if Olan is painting the aura..”

Olan has soul in the work..just like the soul I feel in many works through the ages ..

Haldane Macfall in the foreword of his History of Painting written a century ago expresses it best..

Olan repects all people from all walks of life..
