James Everett Stanley at FreightandVolume – Sept 14th – Oct 14th 2006

Another show I saw on Thursday night was James Everett Stanley at FreightandVolume. The artist is actually the "hooded one" and he seems to want to paint himself that way.  I spoke with James Stanley for a couple of minutes about his paintings in the show - which I thought were pretty good.  The closest parallel for me would be Gustav Gourbet's Bonjour Monsier Courbet" which the artist may have had in mind... just a guess.   I also liked the portrait of "Nellie" below: The technique is good, there's a lot to like.  There was a lot of good work that I'm seeing these days.  There are not too many artists that WOW me... James Stanley did not WOW me..but his work is pretty good - and even when you get close - the brushwork is good, it's clean and the paintings work both close up and at a distance. The paintings are up for another  month - till October 14th.

  1. The paintings were excellent; I was also at that opening and have to disagree with you on the lack of WOW factor. They were amazing. I’d recommend this show.
