Charity by Numbers art event today in LA

Well, I’m not attending and it’s not an event in New York, but Charity by Numbers is an art event in Los Angeles that’s worth covering and was written up yesterday in Boing Boing and being held at the Corey Helford Gallery.   This is what Mark Frauenfelder at Boing Boing had to say about Charity by Numbers:

“….Charity by Numbers, a benefit art auction for The Alliance for Children’s Rights, features vintage paint-by-numbers pieces reinterpreted and transformed by a jaw-dropping lineup of leading underground fine artists including Amy Crehore, Mark Ryden & Marion Peck, Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, Todd & Kathy Schorr, Camille Rose Garcia, Michael Hussar, Shag, Clayton Brothers, Shepard Fairey, Andrew Brandou, Gary Panter, Miss Van, Paul Frank and many more.Charity by Numbers will open with a private reception at Corey Helford Gallery on Saturday February 10th from 6 to 9 PM, followed by a public viewing of the pieces from 10 to midnight later that evening. The auction will be held on eBay from February 10th and end on Saturday, February 17th @ Midnight Pacific Time.

Charity by Numbers must be opening just as I’m writing this in a Brooklyn Cafe in New York City. Here’s some pictures that will be auctioned off tonight:

Amy Crehore Before

Amy Crehore - before

I can see what Amy did, cool.  The nude woman and the monkey fit into the painting - just like they belonged there all along.   There’s a closeup below:

Here’s Fred Stonehouse’s painting (before and after)

I like the changes Fred made to the painting - it’s a lot more interesting after he altered it than before.
