Purvis Young and the Japan Senga Association – 2 shows

There’s no association between Purvis Young, a famed Miami Artist, and the Japan Senga Association – except I happened to go to both places last night – but I did not spend much time at either place.

I did not know anything about Purvis Young but got an eye full last night as I walked into a storefront on W23rd Street where Purvis’s work was coming down.   It was OK, I just wish the enthusiasts in the gallery would stop trying to explain Purvis Young to me and just let me look at the work.

I kinda understand - the lady was trying to educate me about an artist she deeply admires, perhaps worships, but I need space, to be left alone, so I can  actually look at his work and she gave me no space at all.   And then, maybe the dust in the gallery got to me, I had to walk out to catch some air – both from the dust and the woman who would not stop talking about Purvis.

I don’t know his story but Purvis is kinda a hero for many people, so I’m told.   the Art…. well, it was OK, I just happened to walk in from the street because a gallery in that particular location is unusual; and The Home Depot was next door.

Anyway, I ended up seeing a show of Senga Works and drinking some cold Sake.   The Senga prints were masterful but I’m not really into prints – I’m not clear where craft ends and art begins, or is there such a line.

Not much more to say about either show – it’s been kinda snowy here in New York over the last day
