Monkdogz Urban Art - Bob Hogge and Fellow Artists

As soon as I walked into Monkdogz the other night, Bob Hogge (in black, below) came up and introduced himself (it’s his gallery) and offered me a drink.  Bob really took the time to talk to me …how unusual!  Being as I like some of the work in his chelsea gallery and the feeling in the gallery - I thought I’d write it up in ArtNYC.

Bob Hogge strikes me as someone who’s been in the art world for a while - a search on Bob Hogge brings up a Robert D. Hogge who invented “Xfusionistic” art - I think that’s the same guy, but I’m not 100% sure.

I asked Bob Hogge if it was really true that it takes 2 years to set up a NY Art Show.  He said it depends; my gist is it does not take that long to get a show in his gallery if your his kind of artist - someone that is dedicated, is willing to put yourself foward. He sees his gallery and selection process as different than any other gallery…and I believe him.  He had some pretty good work on his walls.

I liked an artist called Marcus Van Soest (he’s an artist to watch) who is showing his work currently in the Monkdogz gallery….Bob Hogge told me this artist got on a plane and came right over to the gallery to ask to show his work in Monkdogz because he had read about Monddogz and Hogge for several  years.  Looks like the trip paid off as Marcos is one of Monkdogz collection of artists that are shown in the Chelsea gallery (Monkdogz has an online gallery that anyone can join for free).

Van Soest was the most original artist I have seen in Chelsea lately - powerful work.  There’s a lot of info on him online and you can see pictures from the opening at Monkdogz Urban Art “Came to Believe” show last week (which I did not know about or I would have come).

  1. […] Aside from liking Marcus’s paintings, which I do, he is a new breed of artist that knows how to use the Internet to foster online communication, totally eliminating distance.  I feel like Marcus van Soest just became a friend of mine - and we haven’t even met yet (I missed his opening last week at MonkDogz). 2. Thank you for the article, some writing in reaction on these articles.

Square wheels drive better, hey bring me around the World without moving…

The Web is a playground to me, a place to promote the “Great Works”, a few years ago I started POWERPAINTER.ORG with the help of Rein Velt, a top programmer whom I got befriended with… The idea behind this high-tec databased site was to become a Worldwide platform for Artists and Artlovers, a place for cross-breeding between the various disciplines in Art. A place where artists are allowed to promote themselves to form bonds with others and creative experiment. Some members: Max Lerou ( The Netherlands / Poet and Writer ), Steve Oatway ( Australia/Junk-Sculptor ), Sunia Boneham ( Brooklyn-NY / Painter and Sculptor ), Arnoud Schuurman ( The Netherlands / Installation Artist ), Slippy da Lizard ( St.Blancard-France / Cuisinier ), Eyekino ( the Netherlands / Video-Artist ), SHAKE ( The Netherlands / Aerosol Culture ), Lou Patrou ( Painter / NYC ), Johan Nieuwborg ( Sculptor / Belgium )and also Bob Hogge ( NYC / Monkdogz Urban Art ) is a member.. It took some time and effort to get other artists to see the promotional value of publishing about their projects and events and cooperations between some of them, on a small scale was an achievement which I could only dream of..More of them started to write weblogs and some of them quite frequently…
And I did small reviews on some of them, last weekend I filmed Video-Artist Eyekino at work in a large The Hague Discoteque and the week before I disd a small interview with Arnoud Schuurman, a young Installation-Artist who does exciting international projects, all this you can find on POWERPAINTER.ORG, membership is free…

Well the web eats a lot of my precious time, more and more I need to focus on my real job, being a Painter, I just recently started working on some new big canvases for a next show wherever in the World.. If I paint my web-cam will be directed to my easel, so that the World can watch the Powerpainter, this way I can bring my studio closer to the people, stop working in hiding, people see me work…

    Inventing the square wheel…
